A Guide to over 125 Munich Beer Gardens
2012 sees the 200th anniversary of the ruling which allowed brewers to sell beer and food for consumption in a beer garden from June until September.
In the days before refrigeration, in order to keep the beer in the cellars cool, the brewers planted chestnut and linden trees in the gardens around the brewery and laid a thick layer of gravel on the ground.
After buying their beer from the brewers, many guests enjoyed relaxing in these areas under the trees and began consuming their beer immediately rather than taking it home. Thus, King Max I granted official permission for the brewers to sell beer and food that could be consumed on the premises and the beer garden was born.
The beer garden tradition is still as popular as ever and an essential part of Munich life. On warm sunny days, Bavarians pack their baskets and head off to their favourite beer garden. Here you will find young and old, locals and tourists, football fans and families all enjoying the "Gemutlichkeit".
There are many events planned to mark this 200 year milestone including:
5th May -
Annual raising of the Maibaum in Viktualienmarkt*
23rd June -
Brauertag (Brewers Day); parade through the city of the brewers agons, horses, families, newly qualified brewers with dancing, music and Schaefflertanz in Viktualienmarkt.*
21st and 22nd July -
Beer Garden Weekend; many beer gardens throughout the city will be hosting events this weekend - here are a few-
Aumeister - bands, schuhplattler dancing, whip cracking display, dancing and family fun (good weather only)
Augustiner Keller - Historical anniversary with coopers, whip cracking and music
9th Hofbraeu Dult - brewery festival, brewery tours, market stalls and free all day entertainment www.hofbraeu-muenchen.de
20th April to 1st September-
A special exhibition at the Bier and Oktoberfest Museum

200 Years of Beer Gardens Celebrations
To commemorate 200 years of the Beer Garden order there is a special weekend on 21st and 22nd July with many events planned. In addition many of the beer gardens have their own events planned for this weekend or at other times to commemorate this milestone.
Here are a few:
An historical anniversary with coopers and whip cracking, music and food.
Bands, Schuhplattler dancing, whip cracking and family entertainment.
A special Jubiläums beer from the Augustiner brewery on sale in August for 5 euros a litre.
On 8th July there will be music and dancing, Alpen horns, and Schuhplattler dancing.
A grand Jubilee on 21 and 22 July, a Mass will cost 4 euros, Hendl 4 euros and a large Breze 2 euros.
Special prices for the jubilee weekend
Live music and entertainment
Happy hour Monday to Friday 3pm to 6pm a Mass of Helles or alcohol free drink will cost 4.99 euros, a Mass of Radler or Russ’n 5.50 euros.

Bee will served “vom Fass” on Sundays during summer

On 28th July a “Grosse Sommerfest “ with a children’s entertainment programme, live music, food and a special Trachten fashion show from 2pm
