A Guide to over 125 Munich Beer Gardens

Available for download Now

2012 sees the 200th anniversary of the ruling which allowed brewers to sell beer and food for consumption in a beer garden from June until September.

In the days before refrigeration, in order to keep the beer in the cellars cool, the brewers planted chestnut and linden trees in the gardens around the brewery and laid a thick layer of gravel on the ground.

After buying their beer from the brewers, many guests enjoyed relaxing in these areas under the trees and began consuming their beer immediately rather than taking it home. Thus, King Max I granted official permission for the brewers to sell beer and food that could be consumed on the premises and the beer garden was born.

The beer garden tradition is still as popular as ever and an essential part of Munich life. On warm sunny days, Bavarians pack their baskets and head off to their favourite beer garden. Here you will find young and old, locals and tourists, football fans and families all enjoying the "Gemutlichkeit".

There are many events planned to mark this 200 year milestone including:

5th May -

Annual raising of the Maibaum in Viktualienmarkt*

23rd June -

Brauertag (Brewers Day); parade through the city of the brewers agons, horses, families, newly qualified brewers with dancing, music and Schaefflertanz in Viktualienmarkt.*
