Beer Halls

A group of people in their twenties sits in animated conversation at one table, with an assortment of one litre steins of cool beer and vase like glasses of wheat beer in front of them. Middle aged couples sit comfortably at other tables reading their newspapers with the appearance of people with no need to hurry. Other couples while away lunchtimes over 2 or 3 courses of delicious food. An elderly gentleman sits alone at his "Stammtisch", which has been in his family for generations, waiting for friends. The waiting staff buzz around efficiently, unhurriedly and nothing is too much trouble. How is the food or how about another drink? Such is the way of life in Munich.

Sound Good?

I count in this category any indoor place to have a drink and possibly some food as in Germany they don't really call them pubs. They can be large, lively cavernous places such as the Hofbraeuhaus or smaller, cosy rooms but you should sample both. in some of Munich's more infamous beer halls such as the Hofbraeuhaus watch out for the locals in their traditional Bavarian clothes, which are worn because they are proud of tradition not just to impress the tourists. The beer halls are all waiter service. There are 6 main breweries in Munich - Hofbrau, Augustiner, Paulaner, Loewenbrau, Spaten and Hacker-Pschorr and all are excellent.

"Your article about the Hofbraeuhaus is well detailed..."

Beer Gardens

So many beer gardens, so little time! What would life be like in Munich in the summer without it's beer gardens? On a lovely summers day there is no better place to relax and soak up the atmosphere than in one of Munich's 180 beer gardens, large or small, either in the sun or under the shade of the large chestnut and linden trees.

2012 sees the 200 year anniversary of the decree allowing brewers to sell beer and bread in beer gardens and many events will be planned in beer gardens around the city. For more information click here

We have tried and tested many beer halls and beer gardens and for more information on what we consider to be the best beer gardens, places to eat and drink see the Shop page for further information.
