40 Years of Munich Olympic Park 2012
The Olympic Park opened in Munich on 26th August 1972, and remains an important events venue covering 850,000 square metres. Over the 40 years it has been host to 31 World, 12 European and around 100 German championships as well as other major sporting events, pop, rock and classical music events and hundreds of fairs and festivals. In fact around 350 events are held here every years - almost one a day!
"It needs to be noted that no other Olympic Park can look back on such a large number of past events and no other Olympic Park can hope to offer such leisure and tourism events".
It is important to note that the Park and Stadia are used regularly by the citizens of Munich, the pool is open daily, the ice rink is home to the local ice hockey team and also to the public for skating, many people run or jog on through the park, there are cafes and beer gardens, boating on the lake, roof top stadium tours and one of the best views of the city is from the top of the Olympic Tower.
In 2006, a large Fan Fest was held in the Park for the Football World cup held in Germany, over 35000 people attended the Fest for every game during the tournament. Fans mixed together happily and enjoyed entertainment, food, drink and of course football. Up to 2006 the Olympic Stadium was home to Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich football teams, who like many European football teams share a stadium and continue to do so at the Allianz Arena. The Olympic Park was also host to many German International football games until 2006.
There are regular events every year such as Sommer Festival, Summer Tollwood, Holiday on Ice, Open Air Cinema and marathons and Easter Egg Hunts.
